The world’s largest cruise ship, the Icon of the Seas, caught fire while it was docked in Costa Maya, Mexico.

According to a Royal Caribbean representative, the crew promptly extinguished the “small fire”.

There were no reported injuries, and the overall impact on board was minor.

The incident occurred on June 25, 2024, and led to a brief power outage on the 250,800-ton vessel.

Backup power was immediately turned on, and the main power system was quickly restored.

Passengers were alerted by on-board announcements and social media reports showing minor daily disruptions.

The Icon of the Seas, launched earlier this year, spans nearly 1,200 feet long and can accommodate up to 7,600 passengers.

It has seven swimming pools, a record-breaking 17,000 square-foot water park, and over 2,800 guest cabins in 28 variations.

Royal Caribbean confirmed that the fire was contained in the area where crew members worked.

The company emphasised that all the crew members were trained to handle such circumstances, and minor, unusual fires are quickly resolved with minimal disturbance to passengers.

Despite the fire and the temporary power outage, the ship’s itinerary remained unchanged, and it has since departed Costa Maya for Cozumel, Mexico.

Since its launch, the $2 billion Icon of the Seas has made headlines for providing a first-of-its-kind experience with numerous amenities, including several pools, a water park, and an array of dining and drinking options.

A standard room on a seven-day Caribbean cruise costs between $1,450 and $1,850, while suites vary from $2,900 to $4.800.

A similar incident occurred on a Carnival Cruise Lines ship earlier this year, indicating that minor fires are common for maritime operators.

Icon of the Seas also experienced a power outage on May 19, 2024, leading to a temporary loss of propulsion while at sea.
