Zelim’s innovative detection and tracking solution, ZOE, has made its debut in the oil and gas sector, marking an important milestone in marine safety technology.

ZOE, now deployed aboard the jack-up rig Valaris Stavanger, is poised to alter safety practices with its automatic person overboard detection and alert system.

ZOE, designed exclusively for the specific requirements of jack-up vessels, is a collaborative effort between Zelim and Valaris that ensures smooth integration and appropriate functionality.

ZOE was installed on the Valaris rig in February and underwent extensive testing and customisation to meet the requirements of offshore operations.

Glen Spearman, Offshore Installation Manager aboard VALARIS Stavanger, underlined the vital need for quick response in the uncertain North Sea environment.

Traditionally, person overboard detection relied on a line of sight, but introducing ZOE provides a transformative 360-degree monitoring capability, significantly enhancing response times and rescue efforts.

Person-overboard situations present various obstacles, ranging from determining the specific time and location of the event to locating the individual in harsh maritime conditions.

ZOE tackles these difficulties straight on, with seven infrared and optical cameras strategically placed throughout the vessel for constant monitoring.

Doug Lothian, Zelim’s Chief Technology Officer, emphasised the significant collaboration and testing that went into ZOE’s development, citing its excellent 96.8% successful detection rate up to 337 meters, which exceeds industry norms.

ZOE’s AI models provide unprecedented accuracy and reliability by leveraging a vast dataset of identified maritime rescue visuals.

When a person goes overboard, ZOE responds by sending automatic alarms to the radio operator and giving real-time footage and tracking of the person at risk.

Most importantly, ZOE logs the vessel’s and person’s positions at the instant of detection, allowing for quick and accurate mayday call geolocation.

ZOE operates autonomously and securely onboard the vessel, eliminating the need for an internet connection and ensuring continuous monitoring and alerting even in isolated offshore situations.

Beyond its primary function, ZOE’s versatility allows for possible security threat identification and red zone monitoring applications.

As Valaris assesses the system’s effectiveness during the trial phase, the industry anticipates ZOE’s potential to transform offshore safety standards.

ZOE’s successful deployment aboard the Valaris Stavanger establishes a new standard for marine safety technology, putting Zelim at the forefront of innovation in the oil and gas industry.
