The Defence Research and Development Organisation (abbreviated as DRDO) successfully performed a flight test of the Supersonic Missile Assisted Release of Torpedo (abbreviated as SMART) from Dr APJ Abdul Kalam Island, located off the Odisha coast on May 1, 2024.

According to the Ministry of Defence, SMART is a missile-powered lightweight torpedo delivery mechanism aimed at strengthening the Indian Navy’s anti-submarine warfare abilities beyond the conventional range of lightweight torpedoes.

The ministry elaborated that this canister-based missile system integrates advanced subsystems, including a two-phase solid propulsion system, an advanced electromechanical actuator system, and a precision inertial navigation technique.

Besides, SMART is prepared with an advanced and unique lightweight torpedo as the payload, delivered through a parachute-based release system.

The missile was fired from a ground mobile launcher on Wednesday morning.

During the test, the entire range capability of the missile was illustrated.

The statement said the test validated several unique mechanisms, such as symmetric separation, velocity, and ejection control.

Rajnath Singh, the Defence minister, praised the DRDO and the industry partners regarding the fruitful SMART flight test.

He said that the development of the system would further enhance the strength of the Navy.

The secretary associated with the Defence R&D department and DRDO Chair, Dr Samir V Kamat, lauded the SMART team’s efforts and urged it to keep progressing on the path of excellence.

What is the Supersonic Missile Assisted Release of Torpedo (SMART)?

The SMART is a next-gen missile-based lightweight torpedo delivery system.

The SMART missile system includes a long-range supersonic missile carrier that can travel up to about 643 km, a lightweight torpedo with a range of 20 km, and a high-explosive warhead (50 kg) as the payload.

The missile employs a two-stage solid propulsion mechanism, a datalink for mid-course updates, electromechanical actuators, precision inertial navigation, and terminal homing of the torpedo.

The development of SMART is meant to counter the rising deployment of submarines by China’s Navy in the Indian Ocean region and improve India’s self-reliance in defence capabilities.
