Russian Nuclear Submarine & Warships Conduct Missile Drills In the Atlantic While En Route To Cuba

The Russian defence ministry stated on Tuesday that a Russian naval frigate and a nuclear-powered submarine carried out missile drills in the Atlantic Ocean while on their way to Cuba.

A statement mentioned that the drills conducted by the sub-Kazan and the warship Adm. Gorshkov involved firing high-precision missiles at mock enemy targets from more than 600 km.

Admiral Gorshkov further carried out training recently to prevent an air attack, the ministry informed.

The vessels are part of a group of four Russian warships scheduled to reach Cuba on Wednesday.

Cuba mentioned last week that these visits were standard practices carried out by the naval units from nations that are allied with Havana and that the vessels were not carrying nuclear weapons and didn’t pose a threat to the area.

The trip will nevertheless be monitored closely by the US at a time of tension with Russia over the ongoing war in Ukraine.

A US official informed reporters last week that the United States does not perceive the move as threatening, but the US Navy will keep track of the exercises.

The official informed that this is about Russia showing that it can have some global power projection.

Adm. Gorshkov was sent by Russia to deploy and test Zircon hypersonic cruise missiles and played a crucial part in joint exercises with the South African and Chinese navies last year.
