Indian Court Sentences 35 Somali Pirates Captured Off Somalia To 10 Days Imprisonment

The Indian Navy’s INS Kolkata recently captured 35 Somali pirates off the coast of Somalia after a 40-hour operation that began on March 15, 2024. A Mumbai court sentenced the pirates to ten days of police imprisonment.

The mission proved to be successful as it resulted in the safe and uninjured rescue of 17 crew members from the hijacked ship MV Ruen on March 16, 2024.

INS Kolkata used strategic methods to force the hijacked vessel Ruen to stop when it was intercepted during the operation in the Arabian Sea, around 2600 miles off the Indian Coast.

The operation was supported by INS Subhadra, P8I maritime patrol aircraft, HALE RPA drones, and MARCOS PRAHARs delivered by a C-17 aircraft.

The Indian Navy is reportedly working to rescue the crew of the ex-MV Ruen, which Somali pirates seized over on December 14, 2023. According to a statement from the Navy, on March 15, an Indian Navy warship confronted the hijacked vessel.

The United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) provided information to the Indian Navy’s Information Fusion Centre—Indian Ocean Region, which served as the basis for the interception. On Saturday, after arriving in Mumbai, the Indian Navy handed the 35 pirates to Mumbai police.

The INS Kolkata’s involvement not only saved the crew members but also cleansed the vessel of illicit weaponry, ammunition, and contraband.

The Indian Navy’s coordinated tactics succeeded in locating and compelling all 35 pirates to surrender, accomplishing a significant operation in the fight against piracy in the area.
