IMO Pays Tribute To Red Sea Attack Victims On International Day Of Seafarers

The International Maritime Organization (IMO) commemorated the International Day of the Seafarer by honouring millions of seafarers worldwide and paying tribute to those who lost their lives while serving aboard ships attacked in the Red Sea.

Mr Arsenio Dominguez, the Secretary General of the IMO, emphasised the determination and sacrifice made by the 2 million seafarers who kept global trade functioning despite unfavourable circumstances.

In a heartfelt video message, Mr Dominguez highlighted seafarers’ challenges, mainly due to piracy and conflict zones, and emphasized their critical role in sustaining global markets.

Mr Dominguez added that the Seafarers have been tested in recent years with hostile acts of piracy and conflict zones and that he acknowledges the resilience and sacrifice of seafarers for work’s sake.

The tribute comes amid the recent attacks on international vessels in the Red Sea, which have killed at least four people since November 2023.

Among the incidents, three people died on the MV True Confidence, and one crew member died on the MV Tutor.

The IMO condemned the attacks, emphasising that they can never be justified.

Mr Antonio Guterres, Secretary General of the United States, also observed the day recognising seafarers’ critical role in maintaining the uninterrupted flow of essential goods worldwide.

The IMO urged for the immediate and unconditional release of the Galaxy Leader and its crew, who have been held captive for more than eight months.

Mr Arsenio Dominguez highlighted the IMO’s commitment to ensuring seafarers’ safety and well-being, stating that their sacrifice will never be forgotten and attacks on the innocent are never justified.

To raise awareness about seafarers’ safety, the IMO launched a social media campaign inviting seafarers to submit safety tips with images using the hashtag #SafetyTipsAtSea on different platforms like Facebook, LinkedIn, X (Twitter), and Instagram.

The campaign encourages organisations, shipping companies, and the maritime community to show their support.

Ms. KC Chin-Sood, a Filipino Seafarer, contributed to the campaign by sharing recommendations for women in the maritime industry, highlighting the need to remain professional and setting boundaries to guarantee personal safety.

Another Filipino seafarer, Mr. Yrhen Bernard Sabanal Balinis, emphasized the importance of communication for situational awareness and psychological safety on board.

As the IMO continues honouring and supporting seafarers, it remains committed to advocating for their protection and recognition.
