Bibby Marine And Gondan To Build The World's First Zero-Emission eCSOV

Bibby Marine, the world leader in operating and owning niche marine assets, has recently signed a shipbuilding agreement with Gondan Shipbuilders to construct what‘s expected to be the world’s first-ever zero-emission electric commissioning service operation vessel.

The eCSOV will be constructed in Gondan’s Asturias shipyard in Spain and delivered in 2026.

Designed in association with UK-based vessel designers Longitude, the eCSOV will boast a strong battery system complemented by advanced dual-fuel methanol engines to enable emissions-free functions.

The eCSOV will boast high-voltage offshore charging facilities that help with rapid recharging to facilitate zero-emission.

Bibby Marine says it will be capable of operating on battery power for more than 16 hours between charging cycles.

As a UK-owned firm, it is pleased that the vessel will be the first-ever UK-designed SOV and a UK-flagged vessel.

Efforts will be made alongside the established supply chain and local academia to ensure that the UK’s shipyards are adequately engaged and have the option to learn throughout the procedure.

The firm wants the scheme to support turning the UK into the world’s number one green technology centre.

The vessel’s delivery could be a game changer for the industry, speeding up the path to net zero and showcasing marine innovation at its finest.

Nigel Quinn, the CEO of Bibby Marine, declared that the project would indicate that clean vessels can be constructed at the exact cost of ownership as traditional fossil-burning vessels, coupled with enormously decreased operating costs.

The firm is excited to start this journey with Bibby Marine, which is at the forefront of offshore wind and dedicated to decarbonizing the maritime sector.

Daniel Scavuzzo, the Sales Director at Gondan Shipbuilders, summarized that the project seamlessly fits with their expertise in zero-emission technology.

This project is part of the Zero Emission Vessels and Infrastructure scheme, financed by the UK Department for Transport and delivered by Innovate UK.

The former (ZEVI) is part of the Department’s UK Shipping Office for Reducing Emissions agenda, a $258.3 million endeavour focused on developing the tech essential to decarbonizing the UK’s domestic maritime sector.
